Is Klario® Clinically Proven?: Understand the Evidence Behind The Hypo Recovery Drink

HIGHLIGHTS

Hypos can be frightening, exhausting and disruptive – and the usual quick fixes can leave you swinging from low to high, then struggling with brain fog for hours. Klario® was created to change how recovery feels.

Klario is a clinically tested drink for people with type 1 diabetes that uses a multi-energy approach called MESH Technology. It combines:

  • Fast‑acting carbs to quickly lift your blood glucose
  • Extra “brain fuel” (BHB and lactate) that your brain can use while your glucose is settling

In a 12‑week clinical trial at the University of Surrey, Klario was used to treat over 1,000 hypos. People using Klario had fewer repeat lows, spent more time in range and reported less brain fog and fatigue afterwards. Many said they could get back to their day faster – and felt more in control of future hypos.

Klario is designed to complement, not replace, the care plan you agree with your diabetes team.

Klario®: A new way to bounce back from hypos

Many people with type 1 diabetes have frequent hypos each year, which can be frightening and draining, and can undermine confidence in managing glucose levels. Standard treatments use fast-acting sugar, which usually corrects the low but can cause blood sugar swings and leave people feeling wiped out or foggy afterwards.

Klario® set out to change that.

The "Multi-Energy" approach: MESH technology

Klario’s MESH Technology – Multi‑Energy Substrate for Hypoglycemia – is a new approach that fuels recovery in two ways.

  • Fast-acting carbs: Quickly raises blood glucose to safe levels.
  • Adaptive energy sources (beta-hydroxybutyrate, BHB + Lactate): Fast, efficient energy sources that your brain can use immediately, and preferentially, while your glucose is stabilising.

Klario was co-developed with leading diabetologists, based on insights from people with diabetes.

Clinical study: What was done

The clinical trial was conducted by a team of experts at the University of Surrey, led by Professor David Russell-Jones. They first studied how the product was handled by the body in six healthy adults, then ran a 12-week trial in 12 adults with type 1 diabetes, comparing the drink with their usual glucose treatment whenever they had a low, using continuous glucose monitors and questionnaires.

Study Results: What was found

In healthy adults, Klario raised blood sugar to similar levels to standard treatment but also increased BHB levels for several hours, providing an additional energy source. In people with T1D, over 1000 hypos were analysed and Klario gave a steadier recovery and fewer repeat lows than standard glucose treatments, while also helping people feel better and more in control after episodes.

1. Steadier recovery, fewer repeat lows

Standard glucose often triggers a “yo‑yo” effect, where levels rise too fast and crash again soon after. With Klario self‑care, participants spent significantly more time-in-range after a hypo and experienced a 27% reduction in recurrent hypo episodes

"Klario stabilised things quicker and prevented me from yo-yo-ing." — Julia, T1D Clinical Trial participant

2. Clearing the brain fog

92% of participants reported "never" or "rarely" feeling the typical hypo-hangover with Klario, and 75% of users got back to their day faster with less brain fog and fatigue.

“Klario helped me get back to normal quickly and feel like me again.” – Jack, T1D Clinical Trial Participant

Participants also said Klario gave them greater confidence in managing future lows – because recovery felt smoother and more predictable.

“Cognitively, I felt better earlier with Klario – it gave me greater confidence.” – Tim, T1D Clinical Trial Participant

3. Easier to use, better experience

Klario’s ‘Original flavour’ was developed to avoid the sickly sweetness and chalky textures often reported with conventional gels and tablets.

Participants preferred the taste and feel of Klario over standard products — describing it as more palatable and refreshing.

The future of hypo self-care: a new standard

The study suggests that combining glucose with an extra brain fuel can offer a smoother, more sustained recovery from hypos than glucose alone. Diabetes experts have described Klario as “a potential new standard of care” for hypoglycaemia recovery, because it targets both the numbers and how you actually feel afterwards.

Better hypo recovery doesn’t just help the person with diabetes. It also supports parents, partners, families, caregivers, colleagues and teammates – everyone who shares those difficult moments – by improving confidence, independence and the speed of getting back to normal life.

Klario is designed to complement the care plan you already have in place with your diabetes team. Always follow the advice of your healthcare professionals and check the label to make sure Klario is right for you.
